It’s October, so why are people wearing and representing the colour pink?
Because it’s breast cancer awareness month!
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer can arise in the cells of the breast. These cancer cells create a malignant tumour, which is a group of these cells, that can grow into and destroy nearby tissue. And worse, this can spread to other parts of the body.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that cells in the breast can change or no longer behave normally. This means that changes may also lead to non-cancerous (benign) conditions such as cysts or atypical hyperplasia and non-cancerous tumours known as intraductal papillomas. Why is breast cancer awareness important in Canada?
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, more than 70 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Therefore, screening tests are important. They help detect breast cancer before symptoms develop. When breast cancer is found and treated early enough, the chances of successful treatment are much better. Why is this beneficial?
The Canadian Cancer Society is doing more than simply raising awareness. They are bringing together Canadians who prove that life is bigger than breast cancer. Consequently, this collective of Canadians supports the largest cancer support system in the country and helps fund the best breast cancer research (Canadian Cancer Society). As a result of this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there has been significant progress in support, prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and care.
