Let’s be real: job hunting kind of sucks.
All for a summer position that you’ll only have for a few months is even worse. Every student wants a relaxing summer break, and really, who would prefer working a crappy job that pays next to nothing, all the while missing out on all the fun stuff their friends are doing?
Nobody. That’s who.
Although heading to work is important (and a great way to help you pay for your pesky student expenses), it’s undeniable that many an exhausted student mumbles and grumbles about having to work a lousy job during summer break. Here are some thoughts that’ll inevitably plague you during your job hunt:
-
“The only reason I’m looking for a job is so my mom will get off my back.”
Alright, Mom. I get it. I should already have a job lined up for the summer, but can’t I have a few days off first?
2. “I wonder how long could get away with saying, ‘I’ve been looking, but there isn’t anything out there.’”
Let’s face it—you lied to mom. You deceived dad. You never even started looking. Because you figured the longer you left it, the less time you’d have to spend working.
-
“I’m overqualified for all these shitty jobs.”
I’m so much better than this. I know it.
-
“I’d rather die than work at a fast food chain.”
Please. Please. Please let me find anything but my last resort of working at McDonalds.
-
“Can’t I have the summer off? I’ve worked hard the whole school year. Well, sort of.”
Seriously, though. Remember when we were kids and actually got to lay back and do nothing all summer? Haven’t I earned it this time around?
-
“What job can I get that will allow me to be as lazy as humanly possible?”
Yes, I’d like a job that requires minimal supervision and negligible responsibilities. And yes, I am asking for $20 an hour. No, this isn’t negotiable.
-
“I just want to work with my best friends this summer. Is that too much to ask?”
My best friend and I are a package deal. You hire one, you hire the other. Also non-negotiable.
-
“If another person asks me to work as an unpaid intern this summer…”
If I’m going to work, I’m going to get paid for it. So no, I’d rather not fetch your coffee all summer for free.
-
“When is it acceptable to give up?”
Doesn’t this job-hunting thing get to a certain point where I can just stop looking and go sit on the beach instead?
-
“Seriously? I’m going to work my butt off for minimum wage?”
I find it insulting that I have to work so many hours doing something that nobody else wants to do and get paid pennies in the process. Ugh.
