Here’s how students are making the most of their winter breaks

Written by Jeffrey L

After a few months of intense schoolwork and studying for what feels like an eternity, the winter break is the perfect time to recharge and recenter. Whether it’s sleeping in everyday, or rewatching Wicked: For Good for the (2nd… 10th time), there are ways to make the most of your well earned precious time off.

Curious how other students are spending their time off? Need some inspiration? Here’s a list of things suggested by fellow students online.

Keeping it Cozy Wozy

“Are you back in your hometown? If yes then you can meet up with your high school friends and keep those friendships going. I am still very close to my high friends.”

“Cooking for family (I enjoy cooking), games such as Minecraft that I haven’t played in years, reading, journaling, gym, hang out with friends, etc.”

“I’d sleep a lot. Sounds lazy but it’s good for your productivity and health.”

“Most campuses are closed. So I go home and enjoy home cooked meals and family time.”

“Journaling, mediating and practicing mindfulness.”

“Exercise is my go-to way to destress and keeping the body active so I don’t become a slug.”

“Spending time with s/o and loved ones. Honestly helps me recharge. AND MY DOG!”

“Finally clean my room and fold all the clothes piling up on my chair.”

Hobbies & Trying Something New

“Try new things to find new hobbies you might like. Winter sports like skating, snowboarding, skiing!”

“There are 100s of things to do during winter break, but it will depend on your personality and your definition of fun. I would personally join a fitness club and try some of their classes.”

“Man NGL connect with nature and stay off the damn phone. I think it’ll rewire our brains and make us more productive in next semester.”

“Pick up a craft! Crafts are the perfect indoor activities. I’ve been needle felting and making jewelry lately (both are easy to pick up). I bought a paper making kit from Amazon that I plan on using this break.”

“Take a roadtrip with your friends. Splitting the cost (gas, meals, rentals) can be affordable. Or take a short vacation if the budget allows for it.”

Getting Ahead

“Review and study ahead if you wanna be productive or make an academic comeback which I need unfortunately.”

“Getting ahead. Apply for spring internships.”

“You can work on your resume.”

“Take an online course and get certified! Will beef up your resume and confidence going into job applications.”

“Working a lot and saving the coin. Make a student debt repay plan. Learn about investing.”

“Selling old clothes, textbooks and random stuff so make some extra cash.”

Meet New Faces

“You can volunteer at your local community center and meet new people. It’s a great way to give back to the community.”

“Libraries also tend to host different events and maybe there is something that might interest you. Those are all free events.”

“Check out local holiday markets and festivities. Not a fan of the cold but sometimes it’s nice to be outside.”

“I joined some clubs at my school last minute and went to their winter events.”

Lose sanity (not recommended):

“Decompose… sorry, typo. Decompress…. Wait, what’s the difference…”

“Scream into my pillow.”

Whatever you choose to do, make it work for you. You earned this time off, and you should spend it however you want to!
